Ledger Nano S Plus Review: The Nano S — Fixed
Released in April 2022, the Ledger Nano S Plus is Ledger's answer to the original Nano S's biggest weakness: limited app storage. At the same $79 price point, the Nano S Plus offers dramatically more space for coin apps while maintaining the proven security architecture of its predecessor.
Background
Ledger (founded 2014, Paris, France) built the Nano S Plus in direct response to user feedback. The most common complaint about the original Nano S was that you could only install 3–5 apps at a time due to limited internal storage. The Nano S Plus solves this completely.
Hardware
The Nano S Plus uses the same form factor as the original Nano S — a compact USB stick-style device with two physical buttons and a small display. Key improvements:
- 1.5MB storage (vs 320KB on original Nano S) — supports 100+ apps simultaneously
- Larger screen (128×64 pixels vs 128×32) for better readability
- CC EAL5+ certified Secure Element chip
- USB-C connector (instead of the older Micro-USB on the original)
- No Bluetooth, no battery (USB-powered)
Security
Identical to the proven Ledger security architecture:
- PIN code protection (4–8 digits, 3 tries before wipe)
- 24-word BIP39 recovery phrase (stored offline, never on Ledger servers)
- Certified Secure Element chip — same as used in bank cards and passports
- Open-source firmware (Ledger app layer is open-source; Secure Element firmware is proprietary but audited)
Supported Coins
The Nano S Plus supports 5,500+ cryptocurrencies. With 1.5MB of storage, you can install all the major coin apps simultaneously — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Polygon, and hundreds more.
Ledger Live
The same Ledger Live companion app works for both Nano S Plus and Nano X. Features include portfolio management, buy/sell/swap (via partners Coinify, MoonPay), staking (ETH, SOL, DOT), and DeFi connectivity via WalletConnect.
Nano S Plus vs Nano X
The main advantage of the Nano X ($149) is Bluetooth and a built-in battery — useful if you want to manage crypto from your phone without a cable. If you primarily use a computer and don't need mobile wireless use, the Nano S Plus at $79 is the better value.
Verdict
The Ledger Nano S Plus is the best value hardware wallet in Ledger's lineup. It fixes the original Nano S's storage problem at the same price, giving you a professional-grade device for securing your crypto. Highly recommended for anyone starting out with hardware wallet security.
- Best value in the Ledger lineup
- Supports 100+ apps simultaneously
- CC EAL5+ certified security
- No Bluetooth / mobile wireless
- Proprietary Secure Element firmware
