Monolith Card Review: The Ethereum-Native Visa Card
Monolith (formerly TokenCard) is a non-custodial Ethereum Visa debit card — meaning you connect your own Ethereum wallet directly to the card, rather than depositing funds into a centralised platform. This makes Monolith unique in the crypto card space.
How It Works
- Create a Monolith Contract Wallet (a smart contract wallet on Ethereum)
- Top up the wallet with ETH or ERC-20 tokens
- When you spend on the card, tokens are automatically converted to GBP/EUR and settled via Visa
The key differentiator: your funds are in your smart contract wallet, not held by a central company. You control the private key.
Supported Assets
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Major ERC-20 tokens (DAI, USDT, USDC, and others)
- New tokens can be added via the Monolith smart contract system
Smart Contract Wallet Features
- Top-up whitelist: You set a whitelist of addresses that can top up your card wallet
- Spending limit: Set daily spending limits enforced by the smart contract
- Community chest: 1% of top-ups goes to a community-governed fund for public goods
Availability
Monolith is available in the UK and European Economic Area (EEA). Not available in the US.
Considerations
- Ethereum mainnet (gas fees apply on top-ups and transactions)
- Non-custodial approach means more complexity for non-technical users
- Smaller user base and less customer support than mainstream crypto cards
- GBP/EUR Visa card (not USD)
Verdict
Monolith is a pioneering product for the DeFi-native audience who want a spending card without giving up custody of their funds. For mainstream users or those who want simplicity, the Coinbase Card or Crypto.com Card may be more suitable.
- Truly non-custodial (your smart contract)
- Ethereum-native DeFi integration
- Spending limits via smart contract
- Complex for non-technical users
- Ethereum gas fees on every top-up
- Limited to UK/EEA
- Smaller platform with less support
