BlockFi Credit Card Review: Bitcoin Rewards Visa

⚠️ Note: BlockFi filed for bankruptcy in November 2022. The BlockFi Credit Card is no longer available for new applications, and the programme has been wound down. This review is for historical reference.

Overview

The BlockFi Rewards Visa Signature Credit Card was a first-of-its-kind credit card that earned Bitcoin cashback on purchases, issued by Deserve (later CURO Financial). It launched in 2021 and attracted significant demand from crypto-enthusiastic consumers.

Key Features (Historical)

  • 1.5% back in Bitcoin on all purchases
  • 2% back in Bitcoin after $30,000 annual spend
  • 2% back on BlockFi crypto trades
  • No annual fee (promotional offer)
  • Standard credit card spending (Visa Signature network)
  • Bitcoin rewards deposited monthly

What Made It Unique

Unlike crypto debit cards that draw on crypto balances, the BlockFi card was a genuine credit card with Bitcoin rewards — meaning you earned yield on top of regular credit card benefits (purchase protection, travel insurance, etc.).

The Collapse

When BlockFi filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, the credit card programme was suspended. Cardholders were transitioned off the platform and Bitcoin rewards were included in the bankruptcy estate. The situation was a significant setback for customers who had accumulated rewards.

Lesson

The BlockFi Credit Card collapse demonstrated that crypto-integrated financial products carry platform counterparty risk beyond typical credit card programmes. When evaluating similar products (Coinbase Card, Crypto.com Card, Nexo Card), always assess the solvency and regulatory standing of the issuer.
