KuCoin Exchange Review: The "People's Exchange"
KuCoin is a Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017, self-styled as "The People's Exchange" for its broad altcoin selection and low minimum investment requirements. It has grown to become one of the top 10 global exchanges by trading volume.
Background
KuCoin was founded by Michael Gan and Eric Don in 2017. While registered in the Seychelles, KuCoin also maintains offices in Singapore and Hong Kong. The exchange does not serve US residents but has obtained regulatory approvals in multiple other jurisdictions. In 2023, the US DOJ indicted two KuCoin founders for anti-money laundering violations, though the exchange continued operating.
Supported Assets
KuCoin lists 700+ cryptocurrencies — one of the broadest selections of any major exchange, with particular strength in small and mid-cap altcoins.
Key Features
Spot Trading: 700+ pairs with solid liquidity on major assets.
Futures: USDT and coin-margined perpetuals up to 100x leverage.
KuCoin Earn: Savings, staking, and KuCoin Spotlight (IEO launchpad).
KCS Token: KuCoin Shares (KCS) native token provides fee discounts (up to 20%) and daily trading fee dividends from exchange revenue.
Trading Bot: Built-in trading bot (grid, DCA, smart rebalancing) without requiring coding.
P2P Trading: Peer-to-peer fiat marketplace in many countries.
Fees
- Standard maker/taker: 0.10%/0.10%
- Discounts with KCS holdings and volume
Security
KuCoin suffered a major hack in September 2020, with approximately $281M stolen. KuCoin recovered ~84% of stolen funds and fully compensated remaining affected users. Security has since been significantly upgraded.
The exchange is not recommended for US residents, who should use regulated alternatives.
Verdict
KuCoin is excellent for accessing early-stage altcoins not listed on major exchanges. The trading bot and KCS dividend model are differentiating features. The 2020 hack and regulatory concerns should be factored into risk assessment.
- 700+ altcoins
- Built-in trading bots
- KCS holder dividends
- Low fees
- Not available for US users
- $281M hack in 2020 (users compensated)
- Regulatory scrutiny (2023 US DOJ indictment)
