What is Fantom?
Fantom is a DAG-based (Directed Acyclic Graph) smart contract platform that achieves fast, cheap transactions through its Lachesis consensus mechanism. Like Avalanche, it's EVM-compatible — meaning Ethereum dApps can deploy there with minimal changes.
At its peak in 2021–2022, Fantom had one of the most active DeFi ecosystems outside of Ethereum, driven largely by Andre Cronje's involvement (the mind behind Yearn Finance).
Our History with FTM
We entered FTM in 2021 during the Andre Cronje era. The ecosystem was genuinely impressive — SpookySwap, Beethoven X, Geist Finance, and a wave of innovative protocols. TVL briefly hit $12 billion.
The exit of Andre Cronje in March 2022 was a significant blow to sentiment and TVL. We reduced our position significantly after that event.
The Sonic Upgrade
Fantom is undergoing a major network upgrade called Sonic, rebranding the chain and dramatically improving performance. The new Sonic chain targets 2,000+ TPS with sub-second finality and introduces a new fee monetisation model for developers.
This upgrade is worth watching — it could be the catalyst that brings developers and liquidity back.
Current Status
We're in monitoring mode. We hold a small position and are watching the Sonic upgrade rollout and ecosystem recovery. If TVL and developer activity pick up post-Sonic, we'd consider adding.
Key Risks
- Heavy dependence on a few key developers historically
- Competitive pressure from other EVM-compatible chains (Avalanche, Polygon, BSC)
- Token unlock schedules worth tracking
