What is Helium?
Helium is a decentralized wireless network that uses blockchain incentives to build out real-world infrastructure. Hotspot operators (individuals who buy and host Helium hardware) earn HNT tokens for providing wireless coverage and relaying data.
The original network focused on IoT (LoRaWAN coverage). Helium has since expanded to Helium Mobile — a decentralized 5G network using CBRS spectrum, where carriers and individuals can deploy small cells and earn rewards.
Our Experience Running a Hotspot
We ran a Helium hotspot for over a year. The honest experience:
The Good:
- Set-and-forget hardware once positioned correctly
- Genuinely passive income when mining rewards were high
- Interesting real-world use case vs. most crypto projects
The Challenges:
- Mining rewards dropped significantly as network density increased
- The migration to Solana (from the original Helium L1) caused months of disruption
- ROI on hotspot hardware took much longer than early adopters experienced
The Solana Migration
In 2023, Helium migrated from its own blockchain to Solana. This was a significant technical and community challenge. The migration eventually completed, but it caused confusion, delayed rewards, and frustrated many operators.
Post-migration, the network is more stable and benefits from Solana's speed and liquidity.
Current Status
We're in monitoring mode. We no longer actively operate a hotspot but watch the Helium Mobile rollout with interest. The concept of crypto-incentivized real-world wireless infrastructure is compelling — execution has been the challenge.
